St. Lucia Gros Piton Guide
Our
Piton mountains both Gros Piton & Petit Piton are St. Lucia’s most popular
attractions and are becoming even more popular for hiking lovers. Set in the
tourist capital of Soufriere which was once the Island’s capital, these
sulphuric spheres rise out of the Caribbean sea to a height over 2500ft.
Many families and mountain lovers find taking a hike up Gros Piton or climbing
the more daring petit piton to be a riveting experience.
Being a tour guide for enthusiast and hardened rock climbers, the piton trails
is something we at Real St. Lucia Tours are most excited in doing. There is no
perfect time of the year one can expect to embark on a tour of Gros Piton or
Petit Piton. See here for
more on St. Lucia’s weather.
Our tropical climate provides the perfect weather conditions to embark on a
hike up Gros or petit piton, where the air is crisp and view from the bottom as
you ascent is remarkable.
Between our two piton peaks, Gros Piton is the tallest, rising to a whopping
2619ft and Petit Piton 2461ft. Gros piton is a much friendlier hike, where
families and anyone who is relatively fit can conquer. The climb is a
challenging one, one which gives families the time to work together and see
everyone make it to the summit.
Petit Piton on the other hand is a
much different adventure – this is not considered a legal climb by the St.
Lucia government but is one which can be made with our certified guides. Learn
more about climbing petit piton here. http://www.islelander.com/petit-piton.html
After a long day of trekking our piton peaks, hikers are treated with the
option of taking a warm deep in the Piton falls, where the hot volcano waters
mix with cold forest streams to create the perfect relaxing experience. If
that’s not you, there are small bars where you can hang out and enjoy local
juices, eat delicacies, or drink Piton beer.
People who have hiked our pitons believe it is to be a journey worth
revisiting, taking more friends with them year round is one reason these
mountains remain so popular.
Climbing our Gros Piton can take anywhere between 4-6 hours, hiring a certified
guide for your ascent is always recommend. You will not only have a companion,
but a guide will serve as a source of information where you will learn much about
the Piton history.
Many climbers find that the history told by the guides make the climb that much
more exciting and interesting. Learning about how the runaway slaves from the
plantations lived on the pitons is something which should be heard. The Pitons
feature a diverse array of plants and trees which are used locally for medicine
or furniture.
We recommend that you get an early start on your hike, best time being around
8-9 am. The trek downwards is easier and the views are just as beautiful. Most
of the island can be seen from the top, making a perfect Kodak moment.
We have no doubt you are going to enjoy hiking Gros Piton or Petit Piton, where
you will be exposed to the beautiful landscape and stunning sites. If you
require any information on hiking either Gros or Petit Piton send us an email
